If meat, vegetable fibers, or pieces of bread keep getting stuck between the same two teeth and you find yourself reaching for dental floss after almost every meal, it may be more than just an annoying inconvenience. Food occasionally getting caught between the teeth is quite common, but when it repeatedly happens in the same spot, there may be an underlying issue worth checking.

Our teeth do not simply sit next to each other. Neighboring teeth normally touch at specific areas called contact points, which help prevent food from being pushed between them while chewing. For example, if the contact between two teeth is too open, a piece of meat can become wedged between them. If the problem started after a filling, the filling may sometimes not provide sufficient contact with the neighboring tooth.

An open contact is not the only possible cause. Tooth decay that changes the shape of a tooth, broken or worn fillings, gum recession, and changes in tooth position over time can also make it easier for food to collect in a particular area. If you never had this problem before and it has recently started, it is worth finding out what has changed.

The main problem is usually not the trapped food itself, but how long it remains there. Repeated food impaction can irritate the gum. You may first notice pressure or discomfort while eating, followed by bleeding when flossing, sensitivity, an unpleasant smell, or pain in the area. Plaque can also accumulate more easily in places that are difficult to clean, increasing the risk of gum problems and tooth decay.

A Quick Check

Consider seeing your dentist if:

  • Food always gets stuck between the same two teeth.

  • The problem has recently started or is getting worse.

  • The same area regularly bleeds when you floss.

  • You notice pain, a bad taste, or an unpleasant smell.

  • You recently had a filling, crown, or another dental procedure in that area.

A common mistake is trying to remove trapped food with toothpicks, needles, or other hard and sharp objects. Although this may provide temporary relief, it can injure the gum. Dental floss or an appropriately sized interdental brush recommended by your dentist is a safer option.

So how is the problem treated? There is no single solution because the cause must be identified first. If tooth decay is responsible, the decay may need treatment. If an existing filling is causing the problem, it may need to be adjusted or replaced. When gum recession or tooth position is involved, a different treatment or cleaning approach may be necessary. Simply “closing the gap” is therefore not the right solution for every patient.

What Should You Do?

Food getting stuck between your teeth once in a while is usually not a reason for concern. However, if you have been cleaning the same area after every meal for days or weeks, do not simply accept it as your new normal. Ask your dentist to check the contact between the teeth, existing fillings, possible tooth decay, and the condition of the surrounding gums.

Sometimes a relatively small problem can be corrected with a simple intervention. The important thing is to identify the reason behind a recurring symptom before it develops into a bigger problem.
